2011 Level 1 Playoff preview: Green Bay Preble vs. Kimberly

            The Green Bay Preble Hornets will face a tough opponent in the 1st round of WIAA football playoffs as they travel to Kimberly to face the #4 seed Papermakers of the Valley Football Association – North Division Saturday night at 7pm.

            The Papermakers (8-1, 6-1) finished tied for 1st with Appleton North in the division. Appleton North beat Kimberly 24-17 in Week 7. North lost to Wausau East earlier in the season by one point.

            Kimberly makes the jump to Division 1 for the 1st time since 2004. The Papermakers have had tremendous success over the past four seasons in Division 2 winning back-to-back state titles in 2007 and 2008 and coming up just short in 2009 as state runner-up to Waunakee. Last season Kimberly lost to eventual state runner-up Cedarburg in Level 3 of the playoffs. Here are the results and stats from Kimberly this season:

            Preble (7-2, 6-2) will make its 14th appearance in the playoffs, the 1st since 2008. The Hornets last won a playoff game back in 2007 when they beat Milwaukee Riverside University 28-0 before losing to Hartford 19-9 in Level 2. Preble made their deepest run in the 2000 season as they reached the state semi-finals beating Merrill 28-20, Chippewa Falls 14-6, DC Everest 20-16 before losing to eventual state champion Oshkosh North 27-13. The Hornets are 11-13 overall in post season play.
